Twitter is starting a service that functions sort of as a newsletter for their Discover feature. The microblogging service announced in a blog post that you can ‘discover the best of Twitter in a weekly email digest delivered to your inbox’. The e-mail is essentially a summary of the most important tweets and stories shared by the people that you are connected with on Twitter. The e-mail is formatted like the Discover tab on Twitter, where you can see who posted the story beneath the summary, to allow you to decide which stories are important to you. If you click any headline, you will be taken straight to the story. You can also tweet your feedback directly from the e-mail as well as see related tweets from the people you follow.

Twitter says that the e-mail will also contain the most engaging tweets that are seen by the people you follow. You will be able to read the engaging tweet, even if you don’t follow the user who posted it. Twitter says, “You can see who from your network retweeted or favorited these Tweets and click “View details” to retweet, favorite, reply or view the conversation around them.” The e-mail service will be rolling out to everyone over the next few weeks and they’re telling users to keep checking their inboxes for new messages from the microblogging service. Just like other Twitter e-mail services, you can customize the settings of the e-mail digest from the Notifications Settings on your Twitter page.

Twitter recently made deals with two companies that could potentially be the power sources behind the new e-mail digest. According to Mashable, one was a personalized e-mail marketing provider, called RestEngine. Twitter hired the team behind RestEngine. The microblogging service also acquired a start-up, called Summify earlier this year. Before Twitter acquired Summify, what the latter service did was send users an e-mail with five stories that they should read based on what their friends posted and engaged with on Twitter.

Upcoming ARM processor based device running Windows 8 will not be supporting third party browsers and will only get Internet explorer for all browsing needs.

Global software giant and the creators of Windows operating system, Microsoft has decided to not allow any third party browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome from running on the upcoming ARM powered devices running Windows 8 operating system.

This means only Internet explorer’s upcoming version, the IE10 will be compatible and functional on the new age operating system. Though Microsoft has not cited any reason for this step but it is quite clear that the PC giant wants to popularise the new IE 10. Security concerns can also be attributed to this decision by Microsoft to some extent but an official confirmation on it still awaited.

Both Google and Mozilla has previously announced that they are already working on browsers based on the Windows 8 operating system that will work on both desktop version as well as metro style browsers for portable devices. But this announcement by Microsoft is bound to give them some major shocks for sure.

Reacting to this Mozilla project manager Asa Dotzler, who is leading the Firefox development effort for Windows 8, has said that Microsoft is trying to cut out competition and forcing users to only be able to use Internet explorer.

Since Windows 8 is yet to be launched, such a policy could be a major hindrance for the adoption of the new operating system.

Facebook has unveiled an app center for mobile phones and tablets. The app store allows mobile devices to download and play Facebook based application right on the mobile devices itself.Facebook app center will be a one stop shop for popular Android and iOS based applications and users will be able to search and read detailed description about these applications right form the Facebook app centre.

Though the app center will provide details and listing for the applications, users will be redirected to their respective application stores for downloading and installing application on their devices. For instance, if a user wants to install Instagram on his Android smartphone, he will be redirected to Google Play Store and same goes for iOS users as well.

The development team has sent out clear instructions to app developers to comply with the changes and make all the required modification to their applications before the app center is launched. The launch is expected to happen within this year itself.

India offered to grant 4G broadband spectrum to Qualcomm Inc on Tuesday, nearly two years after the US chipmaker paid $1 billion in an auction, but cut its spectrum usage period due to a delay in getting an internet service license.

India typically grants radio airwaves for a period of 20 years. In Qualcomm’s case, the telecoms ministry cut the validity of the spectrum by 18 months and asked the company to roll out services in 3-1/2 years, compared with the five years given to other 4G winners, a source with direct knowledge said.

The telecoms ministry, which initially rejected Qualcomm’s application for an internet service license needed to use 4G spectrum, agreed to grant the permit in October.

Qualcomm said in a statement it was not responsible for the delay in getting the internet license, adding the delay was caused by the ministry’s objection to its application. “We are studying the DoT’s decision and will consider any and all options.”

Qualcomm had won 4G spectrum for four of India’s 22 telecoms zones in 2010 auction. Reliance Industries, controlled by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, is the only company to have 4G spectrum in all the telecoms zones.

Some time last month, there were reports about Bengaluru being the next Indian city (the second one), after Kolkata to receive Airtel’s 4G services. Although back then, the popular service provider in the country had not provided users with a definite date, it had mentioned that it would be roughly 30 days from then that the service would be launched in Bengaluru. Reports coming in now confirm that Airtel 4G services have been officially launched in Bengaluru today, following a launch event. Airtel 4G services in Bengaluru were inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, D.V. Sadananda Gowda. Quoting Sanjay Kapoor, CEO – India & South Asia, Bharti Airtel at the event, a Biztech2 report states, “As seen the world over, the total data usage is exploding and is doubling each year to grow to nearly 3.6 hexabytes by 2014. With the launch of 4G, India will move from being a follower in technology to matching the world in this domain. Leading from the front, Airtel is now the only operator that gives citizens of the Information Technology capital of Bengaluru, access to entire spectrum of broadband services including 2G, 3G and now 4G – thereby giving the customers never seen before data experience.”

Airtel for their 4G customers in Bengaluru and Kolkata is offering, what it refers to as ‘Smartbytes’. This newly introduced feature, is Airtel’s 4G LTE top-up service and will essentially allow Airtel 4G customers to purchase add-on packs, which they can purchase once they have exhausted their free benefit usage.

Yet another interesting feature, that users are being offered on Airtel’s 4G network is a movie catalogue. Airtel is introducing a movie catalogue comprising 35 movies for their 4G LTE customers. Airtel will offer 10 movie titles for free, for the first month, which they claim that over lightening fast Airtel 4G LTE, these can be watched without buffering, pixilation and lag. To avail a monthly subscription for the catalogue, Airtel 4G LTE users will have to pay Rs.149 /month for unlimited movies. Some titles on offer include – Rang De Basanti, Fashion, Shootout At Lokhandwala, No One Killed Jessica, among others. Airtel, further, as part of their introductory offer for their customers availing their 4G services, will offer a cashback for the CPE/ dongle, thereby bringing down the device cost to zero, while also encouraging more to adopt 4G services.

Users of the Internet services provided by ISPs, like Reliance Communications [...]

Although not official at the moment, news has it that India is the latest to have joined the ‘BitTorrent sites ban’ bandwagon, resulting in the ban of sites, like The Pirate Bay, KickAssTorrents, BitSnoop and other large BitTorrent websites and popular video-sharing website, Vimeo. Users of the Internet services provided by ISPs, like Reliance Communications and Zylog Wi5, reportedly have lost access to these websites, and those trying to access these websites now will be met by an announcement by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which states that the website has been blocked “as per instructions from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).”

The latest ban, affecting the blackout of the aforementioned websites, thereby snapping access, comes as a continuation to what has been a long battle against such BitTorrent websites (remember MegaUpload?) Reports have it that the ban seems to be a government-directed one, and subscribers to all major Internet service providers in the country seem to be among those affected.

Internet Piracy has been giving creatives sleepless nights and the run against MegaUpload, which began in the UK has only gained momentum with India joining in. Although, there has been no confirmation on whether the ban is government-directed, the fact that the error message is the same as what appeared when MegaUpload was blocked gives it away. Only recently, we had reported about Reliance Entertainment obtaining a court order, ahead of the release of their movie, Singham. After speaking with a representative from Reliance Entertainment who are the official producers and distributors for the film, a previous report had found that the court order was issued to get Indian ISPs to ensure that the company’s movie Singham, which was scheduled to be released then be blocked from unlawful or rather pirated release on filesharing websites.

While the ban on The Pirate Bay, and other BitTorrent websites doesn’t come as much of a surprise, Vimeo featuring on this list has surprised many. Vimeo, as most of us would know is a popular video-sharing website, and not a BitTorrent website, like the others featured on this list, and is legal, for most parts. Vimeo is largely used by independent filmmakers to share their work. Now it isn’t clear, as to why Vimeo has featured on this list, considering that it is similar to YouTube and is a video-sharing website.

ome of us however, are still able to access the sites that have been claimed to be blocked by the ISPs, therefore, there still is a certain level of ambiguity as to subscribers to which ISPs have been affected by the blockage.

It looks like Facebook is trying to bring improvements to its mobile interfaces on all fronts (except the one that really matters that is. The main app is still buggy). Yesterday, we reported that Facebook is looking to expand its Messenger app to the iPad as well as integrate video chatting abilities to the Messenger app for iPhones. Remember, Facebook bought messaging company Beluga to bring you the Messenger application. Now, we’re finally seeing what Facebook intends to do with its $1 billion purchase of photo sharing service, Instagram. On the Facebook App for Every Phone, you will now be able to edit your photos using Sepia and Greyscale filters similar to the ones you could use in Instagram. However, it must be clarified that Instagram had nothing to do with the addition of these filters; the move is most likely an indication of what’s to come. According to Inside Facebook, the filters were created by an engineer at an internal hackathon.

It’s interesting that the update came out first on the Every Phones app, which is a Facebook application that works on Java- based phones. The app is by no means basic; Facebook added the ability to check-in to Places and made it possible for users to interact with Pages last month. This app is particularly important for engaging users in India and countries in Africa where Java-based phones are quite popular. According to a filing that Facebook made with the Securities and Exchange Commission, there are around 83 million monthly active users on the Facebook for Every Phone app.

This move makes the Instagram acquisition a little more intriguing as well. The New York Times reported in August of last year that Facebook was looking to integrate features into its photo sharing abilities similar to those of Instagram. If they had launched filters in their photo uploading and publishing features prior to acquiring Instagram, as any battle in the tech world goes, a lawsuit from Instagram would knock on Facebook’s door. However, now Facebook is free to use Instagram’s concept of editing photos and sharing them in one place. When Facebook made the announcement of the Instagram acquisition, they made it clear that Instagram’s features would stay more or less the same and they had no immediate plans to shut down the photo sharing service. It will be interesting to see if the filters come to the upload photo sections in the Facebook smartphone apps. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if the already buggy apps will allow for such photo editing or if users will just stick to Instagram.

Firefox users have dozens of hotkeys at their disposal to use some of the browser’s functionality. Instead of having to use the mouse to click on elements, or navigate through menu structures to get there, pressing the hotkey is all that is needed to do that.

When you open menus in the browser, you will see that some hotkeys are displayed next to the menu entries. While that’s a great start into getting to know your keyboard shortcuts, it is limited to those that are displayed. If you are comparing the Firefox menu button with the old menu toolbar, you will also notice that the new menu is displaying only a handful of shortcuts, while the old toolbar displayed many more.

When it comes to hotkeys, some are more useful than others. The print hotkey for instance is not really that helpful if you never print web pages or documents in the browser, while the new tab hotkey can surely be useful if you open new tabs regularly in the browser.

11 Firefox Hotkeys

Selecting a tab – You can select tabs in Firefox by clicking with the left-mouse button on them. You can alternatively click on the list all tabs button, or use the Panorama feature to display all tabs that are currently open. The hotkeys Ctrl-Tab, and Ctrl-Shift-Tab let you navigate to the next or previous tab in the browser’s tabbar (Ctrl-PageUp and Ctrl-PageDown offer the same functionality). You can furthermore use Ctrl-[1-9] to activate the first nine tabs in the browser window directly.

Selecting the location bar – If you do not want to click in the location bar to enter a new web address, edit the existing one or use other functionality that it provides, you can alternatively use the Ctrl-L or F6 hotkey to activate it instead. This puts the cursor into the address bar so that you can start to write or edit right away.

Stop – Stop basically tells Firefox to stop loading all contents of a web page that have not been loaded fully yet. This can be very helpful on pages that display fine but still display a loading symbol, or pages that load media contents that you do not really need or want loaded. To stop a web page from continuing to load page elements, hit the ESC key.

Find – On page find is useful if you need to search a page for textual contents. You launch the find bar with F3, and this is also the key to jump to occurrences of the term on the web page. You can use Shift-F3 to jump in the opposite direction.

Copy and Paste – Probably the most used keyboard shortcut when it comes to browsing. You can copy selected elements to the clipboard with Ctrl-c, and paste it again with Ctrl-v. The hotkey Ctrl-a to select everything on a page or a frame can be useful in this regard as well.

Undo and Redo – Undo removes the last action, usually (part of) text that you have entered on a page, while Redo restores it again. To undo contents, use Ctrl-Z, to redo Ctrl-Shfit-Z. You can use the hotkeys multiple times to undo or redo multiple steps.

Website hotkeys – This works slightly different from other hotkeys in the browser. You can assign hotkeys to bookmarks to load those websites by entering the hotkeys – that are called keywords actually – in the address bar.

Increase or Decrease Text Size – Some websites display their contents in a font that is too small, or to large. The hotkeys Ctrl+ and Ctrl- increase or decrease the font size on the selected website.

Full Screen – The full screen shortcut can be helpful if you need more space to display a website correctly in the browser. Just press F11 on the keyboard to do that. Firefox switches to a minimal interface mode, and changes the browser window size to fullscreen. A tap on the same key exits full screen mode.

Reload – You can reload a website with the F5 key, which can be helpful if you want it to display updated contents. This can be an auction at eBay that is running out, a confirmation email that you are waiting for, or a message on a social networking site like Facebook. F5 loads contents from the cache if available. If you want to reload all contents from the web server the site is hosted on, use Ctrl-F5 instead.

New Tab – One of the quickest ways to load a website in a new tab is the new tab hotkey. Use Ctrl-t to open a blank tab in Firefox.

Yahoo India announced the launch of Flickr Uploadr, a new feature that enables simpler, easier, and faster upload of photographs on Flickr. The feature available for both Pro and Free users on the photo storage and sharing service, currently supports Firefox 8, Safari 5, and Chrome 6 browsers.

The new Flickr Uploadr runs on an advanced HTML 5 browser technology. Uploadr simplifies the process of adding photos by allowing drag-and-drop. It provides preview thumbnails, so that users can use the intuitive drag and drop interface to manage and re-order photos before adding it to the Photostream. Photographs can be zoomed, rotated and sorted by title.

While the Uploadr feature has been around for some time now, this new, updated version makes adding photos to your collection just a little be easier.

Flickr is a key component of Yahoo!’s overall product strategy and the photo-sharing site continues to develop across multiple devices and platforms.

The Flickr Uploadr is the third in the series of updates, which began with the Justified Layout launch and addition of the embedded photo editing tool by Aviary. The new feature allows users to add titles, descriptions, tags, and organise photos in different sets.
