Apple has released a new software update for its iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The new iOS 5.1.1 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1521 ) software update addresses three major vulnerabilities in Safari browser. Besides, regular bug fixes are bundled along with number of security fixes under the hood.

This new iOS 5.1.1 update weighs 54 MB and can be downloaded directly over the air through data connection – WiFi or 3G network.As per the Apple Support Center listing, the new iOS 5.1.1 update is meant for the iPod Touch (third and fourth generation), iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad and iPad 2. It brings a new set of fixes including fix for the ‘Unable to purchase’ bug which showed up after users purchase an app.

The iOS 5.1.1 fixes the bugs related to the HDR (High Dynamic Range) option – usually the devices did not respond when one choose HDR option using the Lock Screen shortcut. Also, the AirPlay video playback will be smoother after applying the update. Also the update allows easy switching between 2G and 3G networks on the WiFi+3G models of iPad or iPad 2.

Apple clarified the security fixes in the iOS 5.1.1 software update advisory that three major Safari vulnerabilities are patched. Along with that the update also improves the syncing of Safari Bookmarks and Reading list across devices.

The new iOS 5.1.1 software update can also be installed over a PC or Mac with iTunes installed.

Skype, the VoIP (voice over internet protocol) service provider, has pushed out new updates for its Apple iOS and Google Android platform based apps. The new Skype app update for iOS and Android brings a revamped Instant Messaging user interface for chat. Apart from that, users can now move their own video preview during video calls. Apart from that, there are a number of other improvements under the hood for both platforms.

Skype is one service that allows free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls over Internet Protocol using data connection. As of now, the new update has been rolled out for the official app meant for iOS and Android platforms.With this update, the iOS Skype app has also gets own video preview repositioning feature (during video calls). The mobile service was first boosted by its expansion from iOS devices into Android smartphones earlier in the month, but really hit the headlines after Mark Zuckerberg‘s social network snapped up the small start-up.

According to TechCrunch, Instagram has increased its user base from 30m to more than 40m in just ten days, a growth rate of more than 1m a day.

Instagram has demonstrated an impressive growth rate, reaching the 40m mark in less than two years since its launch in October 2010. It took Facebook four years to pass 100m users, but Instagram is on track to pass that milestone in half the time.

Announcing the acquisition on April 9, Zuckerberg said that Facebook would keep Instagram going as a standalone offering, but the $1bn outlay in stock and cash has raised eyebrows among many people.

Instagram has no revenue stream to speak of, yet at the valuation it is worth more than the New York Times Company, which had revenue of $643m in the fourth quarter of last year and also has more online users, at 44m per month.

Some Instagram users have also expressed concern that Facebook could look to change the photo-sharing service, or introduce targeted advertising to recoup some of its investment.

However, it has been pointed out that Facebook has so far been slow on the uptake in developing mobile services, while Instragram has excelled in the area.

Kunal says that there is still a lot of work he is doing to fully flesh out Siri in Hindi. Siri currently supports four languages; English (in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia), French (in France) and German (in Germany) and Japanese (in Japan). The iPhone 4S was available in Japan in October and it made sense to follow up that launch with Siri in the native language. Hindi hasn’t made the list of planned languages, yet. It would also be interesting if eventually Siri adds more regional language support, like Tamil and Bengali. Facebook mobile, in the mean time, has been made available in 8 Indian languages, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali and Marathi, and of course, Hindi. The iPhone itself does not support Hindi as a language, yet, but a Hindi keyboard is available in the international keyboards part of the phone.

iPhone 5 is reportedly set to launch in the coming June.

Reliable sources informed, the new iPhone will have a rubber or plastic bezel, which will connect the glass front to aluminum back. The bezel material will be similar to that of Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S cases.

Also, the new bezel will cover a new re-designed antenna system that would make way for the device to have aluminum back without the black plastic strip found on the back of 3G iPad.

Though not confirmed, but speculations suggest that next generation iPhone will come with a 4-inch screen.

Market watchers added, with this launch, Apple is expected to return to its normal iPhone launch cycle. Except iPhone 4S which Apple had launched in October 2011, every other previous-generation iPhones have been launched during Apple’s WWDC event.
