After AT&T locked down bootloaders on their HTC One X, it seemed like a bad omen for potential HTC customers on other carriers that like to tinker around with their devices.

Well, if you were worried that about the HTC EVO 4G LTE receiving similar treatment, it looks like Sprint isn’t imposing the same restrictions as AT&T has. According to AndroidCentral, The LTEvo is currently supported by HTCDev’s bootloader unlock tool, and users (if they so choose) can unlock their devices and get some root all up in’nit.

Only problem, when it comes to HTC’s unlock method, that’s about all you can get. To clarify, the bootloader unlock tool wont give a device “S-Off” functionality. HTC has actually gone through great lengths to ensure that all the “fun stuff” that comes with what I like to call, “full root” — flashing AOSP ROMs, kernels, deleting bloatware, custom recoveries, etc. — cannot be done by traditional methods (flashing zips from recovery for instance), but have to be done using the PC (thanks, Earl!). So, for those hoping to run custom AOSP ROMs like CyanogenMod and AOKP or MIUI, you will just have to wait until a full root method can be found and exploited. Considering how development for the HTC One X has been making ground, I’d say those chances are looking pretty good. It’s not much, but it’s a step. The cat and mouse game continues…

Follow these simple steps to upgrade your MediaPad to the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich build.

Huawei has announced the availability of Android ICS update for its MediaPad tablet in India. There are a lot of new and cool things that the upgrade will bring to the tablet.

The new operating system is based on the stock Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 reference design and the appearance of the OS is pretty close to the stock Google Android 4.0 experience without many customisations. Along with users will get the new and improved camera application that can be accessed directly from the standby mode with the help of the unlock key or the slider button.

Along with that users get an all new gallery application, a new people app, the ability to dismiss apps from the recently used menu, and a number of performance tweaks.

But the problem is that you have to manually download the update from Huawei’s website instead the normal over the air route where users get notification which is quite easy.

Though not complex, the manual update process is a bit confusing. Here are some simple steps that you can follow to easily upgrade your Huawei MediaPad tablet to the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Caution: The upgrade will delete all the data and application form the device so make sure you take a backup of the device before beginning the process.

Step 1

To upgrade your MediaPad, you will have to manually download the update file from the Huawei’s support site. Follow the link and navigate below to the ‘download’ tab and locate the ICS upgrade and click on the same to download the file.

Information! …

Please note that it is a 329 MB download, so be patient.

Information! …

Step 2

Once downloaded, unpack the contents of the zip file. The contents of the folder should contain update.zip, unlmt.cfg and cust.zip files inside the dload folder. Using the USB connection of your tablet or an external card reader, place the dload folder in the root of the SD card.Root stands for the parent directory of the SD card without any folder.

Step 3

Turn off the tablet or power it down. Once done, restart the tablet by holding the volume + key, then pressing the power key for two seconds to boot. After that keep the volume + key pressed until the MediaPad logo disappears.

Step 4

If all things go well, you will see the Android mascot with couple of gears rotating on its belly. If this does not happen, then repeat step 3.

Step 5

The device will then update the required files and will automatically upgrade the operating system of the Huawei MediaPad. It is a long process so be patient as it might take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to update the MediaPad to ICS.

Attention! …

Once the OS is successfully upgraded, the device will display OK.

Attention! …

Step 6

If the installation goes wrong, the device will display Fail.

Error! …

If it happens reboot the device and repeat steps 3 and 4.

Firefox users have dozens of hotkeys at their disposal to use some of the browser’s functionality. Instead of having to use the mouse to click on elements, or navigate through menu structures to get there, pressing the hotkey is all that is needed to do that.

When you open menus in the browser, you will see that some hotkeys are displayed next to the menu entries. While that’s a great start into getting to know your keyboard shortcuts, it is limited to those that are displayed. If you are comparing the Firefox menu button with the old menu toolbar, you will also notice that the new menu is displaying only a handful of shortcuts, while the old toolbar displayed many more.

When it comes to hotkeys, some are more useful than others. The print hotkey for instance is not really that helpful if you never print web pages or documents in the browser, while the new tab hotkey can surely be useful if you open new tabs regularly in the browser.

11 Firefox Hotkeys

Selecting a tab – You can select tabs in Firefox by clicking with the left-mouse button on them. You can alternatively click on the list all tabs button, or use the Panorama feature to display all tabs that are currently open. The hotkeys Ctrl-Tab, and Ctrl-Shift-Tab let you navigate to the next or previous tab in the browser’s tabbar (Ctrl-PageUp and Ctrl-PageDown offer the same functionality). You can furthermore use Ctrl-[1-9] to activate the first nine tabs in the browser window directly.

Selecting the location bar – If you do not want to click in the location bar to enter a new web address, edit the existing one or use other functionality that it provides, you can alternatively use the Ctrl-L or F6 hotkey to activate it instead. This puts the cursor into the address bar so that you can start to write or edit right away.

Stop – Stop basically tells Firefox to stop loading all contents of a web page that have not been loaded fully yet. This can be very helpful on pages that display fine but still display a loading symbol, or pages that load media contents that you do not really need or want loaded. To stop a web page from continuing to load page elements, hit the ESC key.

Find – On page find is useful if you need to search a page for textual contents. You launch the find bar with F3, and this is also the key to jump to occurrences of the term on the web page. You can use Shift-F3 to jump in the opposite direction.

Copy and Paste – Probably the most used keyboard shortcut when it comes to browsing. You can copy selected elements to the clipboard with Ctrl-c, and paste it again with Ctrl-v. The hotkey Ctrl-a to select everything on a page or a frame can be useful in this regard as well.

Undo and Redo – Undo removes the last action, usually (part of) text that you have entered on a page, while Redo restores it again. To undo contents, use Ctrl-Z, to redo Ctrl-Shfit-Z. You can use the hotkeys multiple times to undo or redo multiple steps.

Website hotkeys – This works slightly different from other hotkeys in the browser. You can assign hotkeys to bookmarks to load those websites by entering the hotkeys – that are called keywords actually – in the address bar.

Increase or Decrease Text Size – Some websites display their contents in a font that is too small, or to large. The hotkeys Ctrl+ and Ctrl- increase or decrease the font size on the selected website.

Full Screen – The full screen shortcut can be helpful if you need more space to display a website correctly in the browser. Just press F11 on the keyboard to do that. Firefox switches to a minimal interface mode, and changes the browser window size to fullscreen. A tap on the same key exits full screen mode.

Reload – You can reload a website with the F5 key, which can be helpful if you want it to display updated contents. This can be an auction at eBay that is running out, a confirmation email that you are waiting for, or a message on a social networking site like Facebook. F5 loads contents from the cache if available. If you want to reload all contents from the web server the site is hosted on, use Ctrl-F5 instead.

New Tab – One of the quickest ways to load a website in a new tab is the new tab hotkey. Use Ctrl-t to open a blank tab in Firefox.

You can always perform a soft reset on a BlackBerry with the keyboard, without worrying about losing data.

At times some heavy and resource hungry application hangs the smartphone and makes it temporarily unusable. Sometimes the cause of a sluggish phone isn’t that easy to detect.

Usually, in these scenarios users can either do a soft reset or a hard reset. A soft reset sends the phone software to its original (start afresh) state; whereas a hard reset makes the phone go back to the factory state – as it was when you bought it.

Thankfully, RIM has worked smartly on both soft and hard reset options for BlackBerry smartphones. Hard reset involves taking out the smartphone battery for a couple of seconds and then putting it back in. This is the last resort method, when the phone becomes totally unresponsive to any key.

Soft reset for BlackBerry is quite useful to resolve any user interface sluggishness or if the interface has become slow. Reasons for such behavior vary from device to device but solutions are universal.

Here’s a simple and easy to follow guide to reset your smartphone and hopefully solve the software issues in BlackBerry devices. Note that performing a soft reset does not wipe any user data from the device. Save any open files and close them before following the steps below.

STEP 1

Press the alt key on the keyboard and hold it down.

STEP 2

Press the right shift key and hold it down.

STEP 3

Press the backspace/delete key while holding down the alt and right shift keys. The BlackBerry handset will then restart.

MediaTek, a major supplier of chipsets for feature phones, has launched a new compression software which can compress a full length movie to approximately 150 MB without affecting video quality much.

The technology called Mobile Theatre is available on MediaTek’s MT6252c platform, which is being used by major Indian handset brands like Micromax, Lava, Intex and Spice. The software will be included in these handsets very soon. The Mobile Theatre software will also be available on the MediaTek MT6255 and MT6256 platforms, and phones running on these platforms will hit the market soon.

“With Mobile Theater, not only has the problem of video or audio files taking up excessive memory space in handset devices been solved, it also offers a clear improvement on the image and sound quality of compressed files during playback,” MediaTek said in a press release.

The new software will be available in upcoming mobile phones from Micromax, Spice, Karbonn, Lava, Maxx, Videocon, Onida, Intex and Lemon.

The all new software runs both MPEG-4 and H.264, along with some other popular digital video/audio coding formats. It converts the video into 3GP format, which is supported by all major phones. Compressed videos can be shared and played on any mobile.

Mobile Theater software claims to optimise subtitle crispness and sound quality parameters to ensure that compressed video/audio files retain high fidelity. The software also supports 3D content, which can be viewed using blue-red 3D glasses that cost approximately Rs 15.

MediaTek president Hsieh Ching-Jiang, said, “MediaTek has packaged Mobile Theater with advanced features that give feature phone users more added value at no added cost.”

If one of the major problems with your smartphone is battery related, chances are it’s not the phone itself but the apps you’re using, or more specifically, the ads that appear on numerous free apps.

Abhinav Pathak, a computer scientist at Purdue University, Indiana and colleagues discovering that up to 75 per cent of the energy used by free versions of Android apps is spent serving up ads or tracking and uploading user data. Their research, which analysed apps’ energy usage, found that running just one app could drain your battery in around 90 minutes.

When they looked at popular apps, only 10 to 30 per cent of the energy was spent powering the app’s core function. In one of their experiments, Angry Birds only required 20 per cent of energy playing the game, while 45 per cent was spent finding and uploading the user’s location with GPS before downloading a location appropriate ad.

The 3G connection that downloads the ad stays open for around 10 seconds, even if it’s finished downloading. This ‘tail energy’ consumes another 28 per cent of the app’s energy, which Pathak blames on inefficiencies in the third-party code that developers use to generate profit on free apps.

Easy to follow steps to recover deleted files form your external memory card with a very useful free recovery tool.

Smartphones with improved performance can handle more external memory as well. Today, 8 to 16 GB of additional storage in addition to the device’s internal storage are supported by most phones and some smartphones even support up to 32 GB of additional storage. But with this extra memory people keep piling a lot of stuff on these memory cards without any backup either. But what if something really important, like a picture that you need the most, gets misplaced or accidentally deleted. Unlike computers smartphones do not have a recycle bin that can be used to rescue files safely.

Although on your smartphones there isn’t much one can do, but using a computer and a free software utility one can very easily recover lost files within a short span of time. Yes, it is the same process by which professional data recovery agents work; only, they use more advanced tools for recovery, for which they charge a huge sum of money as well.

So here’s how you can easily recover any lost file on your media or storage cards by following just a few steps.

Step 1

To recover a file you need a free data recovery application. We chose Recuva, which has the fastest recovery times for files, though older deleted files might require deeper scanning and that consumes more time. You can download Recuva from http://www.piriform.com/recuva for free.

Step 2

Install the application on your computer. Once the application is installed the automated wizard that will help you recover pictures will come up. You can either choose to exit it or go with it for easy step by step recovery. For the first time using the wizard is a better option. Press ‘next’ to proceed.

Step 3

The application will now ask you for the type of files you need to recover from the media. You can choose between pictures, MP3s, documents and other type of files as well.

Step 4

Following that the application will now ask you for the location you need to recover the data from.

Step 5

You can choose the location of your memory card from the Specific location option. Make sure your memory card is connected to the computer via an external card reader. You can also use this application for recovering files from your device’s internal memory by selecting it instead of the memory card.

Step 6

Once the settings and source of recovery are confirmed by the software it will prompt you to start the scanning. If the file that has to be recovered is several days or weeks old you will have to select the deep scan option before you begin data scan.

Step 7

The application will now scan your data or memory card or the selected data media for lost files and depending on the type of scan chosen, it will show estimated time left for the scan to be complete before recovering files.

We chose deep scan so the application took almost an hour to recover the lost pictures but at the end the files were restored.

The older the files get the lesser the chances are of a successful file recovery as data is constantly over-written on the media. For best results try recovering files as soon as possible and take the media card out of the device if you have accidentally deleted an important file.

Lines across an iPhone screen interfere with your ability to read or watch content. If the issue only persists with one video or a particular application, the problem can be isolated and corrected by replacing that file. When lines affect every screen on your iPhone, you need to have the phone repaired by a professional.

Software

Some screen-related problems may be fixed by updating to the latest iPhone software, which is referred to as iOS. To check for a new version of iOS, connect your iPhone to iTunes on a computer and click the “Check for Update” button in the “Summary” tab. When prompted, approve the download of a new software version. If you are currently running iOS 5 or later, you can check for updates from the “General” section of the “Settings” menu.

Rebooting Hard Drive

If you experience lines in the screen of your iPhone, even after a software update, Apple recommends restarting your phone. Restarting the phone will reboot its hard drive, and may correct any temporary screen issues. Hold down the “Sleep/Wake” button until a slider appears, and then slide the gray arrow all the way to the right of the slider. Wait for about 10 seconds before you press the “Sleep/Wake” button to turn the iPhone back on.

Content Issues

While it is rare, occasionally flawed files are sold in the iTunes Store. When you see a line across your iPhone during a video or application, the problem may be related to that specific piece of content. Try viewing another video to see if the lines still exist. If you determine that you purchased a bad video or app, delete it from your device and then download it again. Once you have paid for something, Apple will not charge you to redownload it.

Repairs

Lines across an iPhone screen that are not associated with only one video or application indicate a larger problem with your hard drive or screen. All iPhones have a one-year limited warranty, which covers defective parts or bad workmanship during the device’s assembly. During that time, your phone will be fixed or replaced for free at an Apple Store or by sending the device to an Apple service center. After one year you must always pay for repairs.
